Estimate the gamma value of your computer display

Tuesday, October 10, 2006

A video display function, i.e, gamma curve, shows the relationship between image code value and the luminance on a display screen. Gamma curves are usually not the same for different computer displays, and the appearance of a same image file will vary. We have implemented a visual matching method to estimate the gamma value roughly. This tool has the options to estimate either single WHITE channel or individual RED, GREEN, and BLUE channels. As a rule of thumb, only the single WHITE channel is required to measure if the color difference between the two matching fields in the test is not obvious to affect the luminance matching processes. You can try to estimate the gamma value of your computer display at website www.visionrc.com/Tweak/DisplayCal.aspx.
